Chapter Seven

Psychology

McDonald’s

I was driving down the road the other day listening to the radio. I almost could not believe my ears at the words I heard coming from the speakers. The talk show host was doing a program on law suits, and the caller was very upset at McDonald’s. It seems he was suing them because he weighed over 650 pounds. His argument, that it was due to their advertisement. Every time he passed a McDonald’s he had to pull in to get a Big Mac. He said that the billboards, magazine ads, and even the way McDonald’s paints their truck causes him to lose control and he has to have one. In short, I am fat because of your advertisements.

The sad part about this story is the man will probably win the suit. We live in a society that has bought into the idea that our issues are the result of something that someone else has done to us. This idea stems from what I call modern psychology. Many writers in the field such as Freud have stated that we are where we are due to our environment. While this idea is true to a certain extent, I don’t feel it should apply to the concept of our everyday choices.

This man weighed 650 pounds because he sought after something that fulfilled a desire at the time. He made the everyday choice to seek out the Big Mac. He sought his happiness in the fulfillment of food. In short, it was his choices that caused his weight problem.

As a pastor, I have dealt with people from all walks of life that have a problem with their happiness as a result of their choices. There have been many times individuals that have entered my office in a depressed state over circumstances, which seem to rob them of their joy. This seems to happen to Christian and non-Christian alike. The reason for these symptoms is that most people choose to concentrate on their happiness. In the book, Effective Biblical Counseling, Dr. Larry Crabb says, “An obsessive preoccupation with ‘my happiness’, often obscures our understanding of the Biblical route to deep, abiding joy” (Crabb 20). People seem to concentrate on what makes them happy at the time, and when things deviate from that happiness, they become depressed.

Many times the same person returns over and over again. The situation they were struggling with has been resolved, but now a new set of circumstances has stolen their joy, and they return in worse shape than before. The reason for this is that as a counselor/pastor I have failed to get the person to see that their happiness is found in Christ. It is not that I haven’t tried; it is that I have failed to make the connection with the person that fosters the trust it takes to get to the deepest emotional thoughts that need to be changed. This involves an element of trust because the person is facing something they haven’t revealed even to themselves, and that is that their motives are self-centered.
